Does ginkgo helps in dementia?
Is said, that Ginkgo extract to have positive effects on memory. This is now confirmed by a study. Even with dementia Ginkgo may be useful.
Intake of Ginkgo can have a positive effect in dementia both on the cognitive abilities as well as on the behavior. This shows a study that was recently published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research. 410 patients with mild to moderate dementia were given during 24 weeks either an extract from the leaves of the Ginkgo tree (EGb 761) or a placebo.
The randomized, double-blind study showed, that when taking ginkgo, as measured by a syndrome-short test, significantly improved. Even behavioral disorders decreased and everyday functionality improved. It was interesting for the researchers, that positive effects in various forms of dementia, namely, vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease has been showed. However, the improvements in vascular dementia were slightly larger than in Alzheimer’s disease.
“EGb 761 is always an appropriate choice in case of Alzheimer’s disease, a vascular dementia or both simultaneously” explains study author. In previous studies, Ginkgo has been found to be useful in cognitive disorders. An investigation even provide evidence, that not only the consequences of dementia improved, but also the onset of the disease can be delayed.
